Term Definition

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in chewing gums, candies, sugar free puddings and other snacks that is very toxic to Dogs. Within an hour after ingestion, xylitol causes the pancreas to release insulin which causes a sudden decrease in blood sugar. This rapid drop in blood sugar can cause disorientation, weakness, seizures, collapse and even death. Later many Dogs develop liver damage. Just a small amount of xylitol can induce this hypoglycemic state. If you suspect your Dog has consumed a xylitol product, see your veterinarian immediately. (See Hypoglycemia.)
